Kehren Barbour returned to Appalachia after working in dance & experimental arts in the San Francisco Bay area to pursue graduate studies in Sustainable Development at Appalachian State University. Born in West Virginia, she was interested in study of Sustainable Development from a place being dismantled by extractive industries.
Design work in the Bay Area included work for: the American Conservatory Theater, the Magic Theater, Z Space, Ashby Stage, and for a number of artists on stage at Project Artaud Theater. Kehren designed set components for the Brooklyn Folk Fest in May 2012 and stage design for the Kronos Quartet’s Awakenings at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in September 2011.
I am interested in residencies, short-term projects working with subject matter related creativity as tool to foster concepts related to Sustainable Development. I believe that the creative process fosters examination and appropriate response to the challenges facing us as a inhabitants on an overburdened planet.
Kehren has continued to design for stage, working for the Magnetic Theater in Asheville, NC. She lives in Asheville with her husband and son.

“We need the tonic of wildness…At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.”
― Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods
Kehren Barbour has formal training and experience in the fine and theatrical arts. Trained both academically and experiencially in cross-media experimentation, stage presentation, and storytelling, Barbour use object as medium to recreate a story and share an experience with audience.
Interested in the habit of objects and their keepers: wanting, seeking, having, maintaining, disregarding, and discarding. Barbour is interested in both action and outcome of a creative environment. I am looking forward to artists residencies in the near future.
